Many nonprofits use occasional pro bono assistance. But the Appleseed Network works to build and customize every project around the expertise and support of its pro bono partners. Partners participate in conception, design, and execution of projects at the national, state, and local level. They lead research, analysis, advocacy, public education, and litigation work. Pro Bono partners dramatically multiply the power of locally-led research, advocacy and litigation projects for social justice.
The Appleseed Network organizes its collective work through five different project areas, each guided by a Working Group composed of expert staff from Appleseed Centers and network board members. These project areas include criminal and juvenile justice reform; protecting the rights and assets of immigrant families; advancing education and protecting vulnerable youth; access to justice, good government and democracy; and combating poverty and building assets.

- Revising Appleseed’s “Deportation Manual” that helps immigrants prepare their families, finances, and personal property for the potential cataclysm of deportation.
- Helping to create America’s first “Breakfast after the Bell” law in New Mexico, which fights hunger by reducing the stigma felt by poor children who receive free school breakfasts.
- Working with Appleseed to make the case for and win reforms to payday lending and title loan laws in numerous states and at the national level.
- Providing research and economic analysis to help secure transparency and fair pricing consistency for immigrant consumers who send money abroad.
- Providing research, litigation, and lobbying support to help Texas become the 49th state to decriminalize truancy.
