Appleseed is a nonprofit network of 16 Centers across the U.S. and Mexico, dedicated to advancing justice and opportunities that help low-income people and working families build better lives. Appleseed employs many time-tested approaches used by other advocacy organizations, including litigation, policy advocacy, and grassroots organizing. But we do much more and do it in a way that makes a real difference—by staying close to communities, winning victories in hard political environments, and bringing the power and expertise of a binational Network to bear on cross-cutting social issues.

Appleseed Centers are deeply rooted in the communities where they work. They are staffed by highly skilled professionals— lawyers, policy analysts, community organizers—who know how to use political leverage, mobilize coalitions, and fight for solutions that build resilient communities. They are supported in this work by pro bono attorneys from many of the nation’s top tier law firms and corporations, economists, researchers, and others. LEADERSHIP FROM THE NETWORK/BINATIONAL OFFICE

At the hub of our cross-collaborative model is the Appleseed Binational or Network Office, which provides crucial leadership by coordinating projects, helping build Center capacity and facilitating partnerships with pro bono providers and national organizations; providing resource development and advocacy at the national and federal level; and bringing new Centers into the Network.

THE APPLESEED DIFFERENCE: THE POWER OF THE NETWORK

While the foundation of Appleseed’s success comes from the effectiveness of our Centers, collaborative advocacy among the Centers dramatically increases Appleseed’s power. The strength of the Network lies in its ability to both address issues at the local level and develop collaborative work across jurisdictions; learn lessons and share advocacy strategies that work; and leverage substantial pro bono support to advance our mission. Appleseed Centers work hand-in-hand with community leaders and people facing poverty and inequality so that solutions are not imposed from the top down. Instead, Appleseed solutions are built from the bottom up, and respond to the needs and aspirations of our communities. In a fractured political environment, Appleseed has found a way to win important victories—often by crossing political divides in red and blue states.

Our work is concentrated in 5 main issue areas and primarily happens through Working Groups, which provide a forum for Appleseed Center staff to tackle issues of cross Center importance. Learn more about the issue areas currently being addressed by the Working Groups here:
  • Access to Justice, Good Government, and Democracy;
  • Criminal Justice, Juvenile Justice, and Decarceration;
  • Advancing Education and Protecting Vulnerable Youth;
  • Economic Justice, Combating Poverty, and Building Assets; and
  • Protecting and Advancing the Rights of Immigrants.
