Protecting the Rights and Assets of People Facing Deportation

Coinciding with International Migrants Day, Appleseed has released "Protecting Assets and Child Custody in the Face of Deportation: A Guide for Practitioners Assisting Immigrant Families," a manual that guides volunteer lawyers and non-lawyer practitioners through important financial and family rights threatened by the deportation process, including final paychecks, bank accounts, car and home ownership, government benefits, and child custody. Texas to Issue Improved Disaster Relief Plan to Support Low Income Homeowners

Despite persistent warnings from Texas Appleseed and other advocates, Texas' plan to distribute $1.7 billion in federal disaster relief for local victims of Hurricanes Dolly and Ike failed to comply with federal law and regulations. As a result, the U.S.Department of Housing and Urban Development refused to accept the plan and is requiring the state to draft a new versionthat complies with those mandates. Read more...

 
Heir Property Project Progresses and Expands

Appleseed's groundbreaking heir property project now encompasses more than 20 states! Desinged to protect low-income homeowners who lack clear title to inherited property, the project involves identifying policy gaps that expose families to the risk of dispossession or other legal complications. Appleseed's pro bono partners are comparing state laws to a proposed law being drafted by the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws. Read more...

It Takes A Parent: Parent Involvement Project Update

Joining a number of top advocates who seek closer cooperation between parents and schools, Edwin Darden, Appleseed's Director of Education Law & Policy, was among the presenters at last month's National Summit on Minority Parent Engagement, hosted by the National Education Association (NEA) and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF). Darden attended the two-day summit in Los Angeles as an ambassador of Appleseed's expertise on parent involvement issues, particularly those relating to communities of low-income and second-language families. Consumer Protection Act Passes House Committee

As an improtant safeguard against the reckless and predatory lending practices that triggered last year's financial crisis, the the Consumer Financial Protection Agency Act recently won the approval of the U.S. House of Representatives Financial Services Committee. If signed into law, the act would create a federal agency to regulate home loans, credit cards, savings accounts, and other financial services, including international remittances. Read more...

 
NY Appleseed Program Offers Legal Aid to Those in Debt

In the spirit of the National Pro Bono Celebration, New York Appleseed has launched an exciting new program to engage pro bono assistance for one of our nation's foremost legal crises: consumer debt. Approximately 300,000 consumer debt cases were filed in New York City in 2008, with over 98 percent of defendants going unrepresented. As a result, many people remain unaware of their rights and options when confronted with litigation. Read more...

 
Nebraska Center Confronts Mistreatment of Meatpacking Workers

Driving an effort to ensure the humane treatment of meatpacking workers, Nebraska Appleseed recently released a major study of on-the-job health and safety. The Center surveyed 455 workers in five communities across Nebraska - one of the country's largest meat producers - to assess working conditions from the perspective of those who face them daily.
