New Appleseed Report Highlights Unmet Financial Needs of Immigrants

A new study released by Appleseed examines the use of, and access to, financial services by Mexican immigrants in Chicago, proposing improved practices on the part of financial institutions and money-service businesses. Published in partnership with Huron Consulting Group, the report concludes that immigrants' ability to build and protect financial assets must be supported by broader access to banking services, personal credit, and insurance. Alabama Appleseed Tackles 'Heir Property' Issues

Confronting a dire legal issue exposed by Hurricane Katrina, Alabama Appleseed has enlisted the pro bono support of the Young Lawyers Section of the state bar to help low-wealth households secure title to inherited properties. The effort is designed to prevent abusive practices that result in the loss of family land and homes, and to help these families gain vital access to rebuilding funds and other financial services. Appleseed Policy Director Assumes Prestigious Role in ELA

Join us in congratulating Edwin C. Darden, education policy director for Appleseed's national office, on his election to the vice presidency of the Education Law Association's board of directors. Currently, Darden is leading three primary educational projects at Appleseed: improving parental involvement under the No Child Left behind Act; examining the effect of teacher and principal contracts on school performance; and promoting equity of resources within a single district.
