New Jersey Appleseed Fights to Defend Public Interest in Health Care

More than 10 years ago, New Jersey Appleseed was a major player in the court decision ruling that Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, a nonprofit health service corporation, is considered a "charity" under the law. Appleseed Spotlight: Malcolm A. Meyer
August 8, 2008

Malcolm A. Meyer, a Louisiana Appleseed volunteer and partner at Adams and Reese in New Orleans, has written the book on Louisiana property law. His book, Meyer's Manual on Louisiana Real Estate, is the acknowledged treatise on Louisiana real estate law. Considered by many to be a national expert on this subject, last year Meyer joined forces with Louisiana Appleseed to combat the problem of "heir property," or property without a clear title, personally contributing 100 hours of pro bono work. Nebraska Appleseed Challenges Unfair Medicaid Policies
July 31, 2008

Nebraska Appleseed continues to launch its attack against statewide health care problems, filing a petition this week that calls for a change in policy that penalizes working Nebraskans. The petition requests that the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services abolish a rule that prevents low-income families from receiving health care because they work too many hours. On July 1, Appleseed embarked upon a new fiscal year amid considerable economic uncertainty. Thus Appleseed's social justice work is needed now more than ever. People across the United States and in Mexico are facing greater hardships due to the worsening economy. Alabama Appleseed Begins Initiative to Rewrite State Constitution
July 18, 2008

Alabama Appleseed has announced a new project to rewrite the state's Constitution, which was originally adopted in 1901. In this three-year project, the Constitutional Reform Initiative will engage Alabama's legal community to find common cause to rewrite the Constitution, which, at more than 900 pages and with 800 amendments, is the largest constitution in the world. DC Appleseed Successfully Champions for Public Health Funding
July 10, 2008

As the result of a seven-year DC Appleseed project, the DC attorney general's office last month filed a lawsuit asserting that the nonprofit CareFirst, the DC area's largest health insurance company, can afford and is legally obligated to provide millions of additional dollars for community health care needs. On the same day, DC Councilmember Mary Cheh was granted subpoena power to compel CareFirst to provide information about its performance as a charitable and benevolent nonprofit health care entity.
