FOIA and Immigration Court Reform

Last week marked the nationwide celebration of Sunshine Week, an initiative to promote dialogue about the importance of open government and freedom of information. As part of that dialogue, Appleseed is reasserting its proposal to reform immigration courts by eliminating the requirement that immigrants file a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request in order to obtain their court records.

Heir Property Model Rule Update

The national Uniform Law Commission's Drafting Committee on the Uniform Partition of Inherited Property Act will meet March 26-28 to finalize its draft of proposed uniform statelegislation concerning the means for selling or dividing heir property, land that has been passed down from generation to generation without a valid will.

 
Tim Mayopoulos Begins Term as Appleseed Board Co-Chair

Appleseed is delighted to announce that, as of last week's National Board of Directors meeting in Washington, D.C., Tim Mayopoulos has begun his two-year term as board co-chair. Mayopoulos succeeds Jim Rogers, a retired Latham & Watkins partner, who steps down after having brilliantly fulfilled his two-year term, and joins fellow co-chair Steve Gates, special counsel for Mayer Brown.
