Georgia Appleseed Center for Law and Justice will host an inaugural Spring For Justice fundraising event on Wednesday, May 3, at The Carter Center.

Georgia Appleseed was launched in November 2005 as an addition to the Appleseed network of public interest law centers.  The non-partisan, non-profit organization seeks to build a more just Georgia through education, legal advocacy, community activism and policy expertise.

The Spring For Justice cocktail reception will celebrate the founding of the Georgia Appleseed Center for Law and Justice, which is the 17th center in the national Appleseed network.  Kilpatrick Stockton LLP, King & Spalding LLP, Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP and Southern Company will be recognized at the event as Georgia Appleseed's founding funders.

The evening will include keynote remarks from national Appleseed board member Ted Hester, partner King & Spalding (D.C.).  Many prominent lawyers, business leaders and educators are on Georgia Appleseed's Board of Directors, including former Georgia Governor Roy Barnes; former Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Norman Fletcher; Jim Blanchard, Chairman of the Board for Synovus; Dr. Portia Shields, President Emeritus for Albany State University; and Chuck Clay, former Chair of the State Republican Party.

The national Appleseed office is the hub of the 18 non-partisan and non-profit public interest law centers.  It has been called "Pro Bono's New Frontier" by The American Lawyer magazine and it works to connect private practice lawyers, corporate counsel, law schools, civic leaders and other professionals to resolve local problems.

Currently, the Georgia Appleseed is focused on three national collaborative projects.  It is working to increase parental involvement in public education through the No Child Left Behind Act, to advance economic security with financial access for low income immigrants and to expand access to justice for people with mental illness.
