Firm Forums
Through these events, law firms may host Appleseed’s Executive Director and guest speakers for discussions on ways to get involved with Appleseed, current programs and emerging legal and policy issues. Firm Forums are catered events that engage partners, associates, law students and others who are passionate about creating fundamental and lasting social change. The meetings allow professionals from across the DC metropolitan area and beyond to connect with one another and share with each other the important work that they are doing.
Our appreciation goes to the Board members and firms listed below that hosted previous forums this year:
-
Steve Schulman, Akin Gump
-
Marc Fleischaker, Arent Fox
-
Philip Zeidman, DLA Piper
We encourage other firms to host these types of events. For more information, please contact Nakia Kelly at 202.347.7960 or nkelly@appleseednetwork.org.

Pillars of Justice Awards Gala
Thursday, March 24, 2011
6:00-9:00 p.m.
Carnivale
We are pleased to announce that Appleseed and Chicago Appleseed will host the Pillars of Justice Awards Gala at Carnivale, one of Chicago’s hottest venues, on Thursday, March 24, 2011. The event will begin with an elegant cocktail reception followed by a brief program highlighting the exceptional efforts and achievements of those who promote Appleseed’s mission and vision.
Michael Shakman, a well-respected litigator and partner with Miller Shakman & Beem, will receive the Unsung Hero Award for his dedication to good government in bringing about the Shakman Decrees, which prohibited the practice of hiring and firing government workers on the basis of political loyalty. Lisa Scruggs, a partner with Jenner & Block, will receive the Commitment to Justice Award for her work on education reform in Chicago and throughout Illinois. The keynote speaker will be Thomas L. Sager, Senior Vice President and General Counsel at DuPont Legal and member of the Appleseed Board of Directors. Mr. Sager is particularly known for developing the DuPont Convergence and Law Firm Partnering Program, regarded as a benchmark in the legal profession for its innovative approach to the business of practicing law.
We are thankful to have the invaluable support of our Gala Host Committee, consisting of National Appleseed Board Co-Chair Steve Gates, Chair-Elect Natalia Delgado, board member Paul Lovejoy and Chicago Appleseed Board President Stan Adelman.
