The D.C. Appleseed Center for Law and Justice is giving away $5,000 for the best idea to solve the District's biggest problems. It's part of the organization's newly launched "Solving D.C. Problems Campaign 2006," a contest sponsored by the June and John Hechinger Family Trusts and donors to the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region.

Entrants are asked to come up with a "cutting-edge" solution to at least one of the city's biggest problems in no more than 250 words. The second-best idea gets $2,500, and third-best gets $1,000.

D.C. Appleseed will narrow the entries down to 20 finalists. Members of the public will then get to vote for the best three.

For details on how to enter the contest, visit the nonprofit group's Web site, http://www.solvingDCproblems.com.
