Appleseed Program Provides Forum for Residents' Concerns

WTOP Radio (Washington, D.C.)

District of Columbia residents listen up! If you've ever waited a really long time to have your street plowed or have some other complaint about city-wide services, now there's a way for you to be heard. The nonprofit organization DC Appleseed has launched a new program which gives people living in the city a way to make an impact on policy that affects them.

By logging on to DC Appleseed citizens can air their grievances and share ideas with top policy makers and other residents.

The new site resource builds upon Appleseed's Solving DC Problems contest which kicked off in 2006. More than 1,500 ideas were submitted to the city for the contest, some ideas were presented to mayoral candidates during a campaign forum.

The rest of the ideas were compiled in a book for government officials to review.

Over the next few months, residents will weigh-in on issues including affordable housing, substance abuse and fire and emergency services.

Appleseed will compile the information for review and discussion during the Mayor's CapStat session. CapStat sessions bring city officials to the table to discuss matters which concern residents the most.
