New York taxi drivers work 60 to 70 hours a week and serve over half a million riders a day, yet the majority are members of the working poor. The 50,000-person workforce is insured at less than half the rate of other New Yorkers–a tough problem that Appleseed has been working on with the New York Taxi Workers’ Alliance.
This past July, the project reached a key milestone when the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission approved a permanent source of funds for a Health & Disability Fund for taxi drivers. New York Appleseed and Arent Fox will continue to work with the Alliance to make the fund a reality for drivers.
